WAGGGS Communication – Make 22nd September International Girls Day
A global campaign to make 22 September the International Day of the Girl gains momentum. ON 22nd September 2011, MEP Edite Estrela, Vice Chair of the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality committee in the European Parliament, together with four other MEPs launched a Written Declaration in the European Parliament calling on the EU to support this initiative when it is presented to the United Nations next month and voted on in December.
WAGGGS is supporting this campaign at global level, and at European level, in co-operation with Plan International and the European Parliamentary Forum on Development we took part in the European Week of Action for Girls in the European Parliament when the Written Declaration was launched. We believe an International day of the Girl will focus the world’s attention on the importance of girls’ rights, the inequalities girls face and opportunities to raise awareness to ensure that girls get the investment and recognition they deserve as citizens and as powerful agents of change within their own families, communities and nations. However a majority of MEPs must sign the Written Declaration for it to come into effect, and we would like to request your assistance in contacting MEPs you feel may be sympathetic to signing the Written Declaration, particularly those with whom you already have some contact, to seek their support.
To help the process, please find here a template letter explaining the reasons why it is important to have an International Day of the Girl which you can send to request their support. Also attached is the text of the Written Declaration (which is also available in all 27 EU languages here) to enclose with the letter. You can find a list of MEPS by country and their contact details here and you can check who has already signed the declaration here.
We do hope you will be able to support this initiative.
Please contact the Europe Office at if you have any questions, to let us know about any action you decide to take and any reply you receive.
Young European 2012
The Schwarzkopf-foundation is looking for young people from Europe between the ages of 18 and 26 who are imaginative and active in an honorary capacity engaged for the European understanding and integration. Young people prepared to grasp the opportunities of our time in forging peaceful coexistence in a Europe of diversity.
Each year with this prize the Schwarzkopf Foundation rewards a young European for his/her outstanding commitment to fostering international understanding and the union of Europe. At the same time we want to encourage and motivate these young people to continue to champion these ideals.
The sum donated for the prize is € 5.000. This amount is intended to finance a six-month internship with a Member of the European Parliament or another European institution. It is also possible to use the sum to finance a project which promotes European integration. Such a project must further the aims of the Schwarzkopf Foundation and receive the agreement of the Foundation’s Management board in order to be accepted.
The award-winner will be chosen by a jury of personalities from the European Youth Parliament, the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Schwarzkopf Young Europe Foundation.
Deadline for entries: 30 October 2011
Want to find out more? and/or nominate a young person who fits the bill please follow this link
Pick ‘n Mix – Joint Evaluation Report

The structure of the event was built in order to provide participants the opportunity to follow a learning path tailored to their learning expectations and needs.
WAGGGS Record of Decisions
The purpose of this document is to be a record of all the decisions taken at the 2011 Extraordinary General Meeting of the European Guide Conference in Edinburgh and it serves as a procedural report of the conference.
29 Full Members and 2 Associate Members attended the conference.
WAGGGS Call for Volunteers to join the Finance Working Group
The 13th European Guide Conference recommended that the Europe Committee WAGGGS establish a working group to report on the way the voluntary contribution is calculated and funded. The Extraordinary Meeting at the Regional Gathering at the WAGGGS World Conference in July 2011 decided that this group should continue its mandate until the 14th European Guide Conference in 2013.
Individual members of WAGGGS member organisations interested in contributing to this work of the Region while gaining knowledge and skills that can strengthen their volunteer and professional profile are called to send us their application.
More information is available here in English and French
Expressions of interest have to reach the Europe Office WAGGGS by the 16/09/2011.
